SHELBY COUNTY GOVERNMENT CELEBRATES TWO TERMS OF THE HARRIS ADMINISTRATION WITH AN OFFICIAL PORTRAIT UNVEILING
The official portrait of Mayor Lee Harris will be unveiled inside the newest addition to the National Civil Rights Museum, The Legacy Experience.

Shelby County, TN – On Thursday, August 27, at 3:15 p.m., Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris will be joined by family, friends, peers, and those who have believed in him and supported him through his historic two terms as Shelby County Mayor to unveil his official portrait. The event will take place at the newest addition to the National Civil Rights Museum, The Legacy Experience. This new exhibit tracks the movements for justice and equality over the last 50 years after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Mayor Harris’s official portrait was painted by Memphis artist, Jared Small, whose portraits are known for their vivid detail and brilliant color on canvas and board. Small was born in Memphis and graduated from Overton High School, Mayor Harris’s alma mater.
Mayor Harris’s official portrait will be on display with the portraits of County Mayors before him at the Vasco A. Smith County Administration Building.
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris: “It’s an incredible honor for this portrait to join those of the mayors who came before me. This represents more than just two terms in office. It’s about the work we did together to make Shelby County a stronger, healthier, and more hopeful place for every family.”

He has passed laws to protect victims of gun violence, opened clinics providing free health care, and helped launch the first new school construction in Shelby County in more than a decade. It’s fitting that one of his final events as Shelby County Mayor takes place at the National Civil Rights Museum, a place dedicated to the kind of progress that has driven his entire career in public service.”
Jared Small, Artist: “The goal of this portrait was to not only capture Mayor Harris’s likeness, but also his character and the weight of his years in public office. It was an honor to be commissioned for this portrait that will be seen for generations to come.”
